Gotta love that creative flow…
One of my favourite memories from elementary school happened in grade 6. We had a musician from the Toronto Symphony Orchestra come to our school with a special project. That goal? To make a musical. But not just any musical; a musical that consisted of sounds not created by traditional instruments.
My class chose to do a musical about aliens. We were encouraged to take any material we could find and create our sounds. We combed through the classroom, searched our school yard and houses for possible musical inspiration. We must have driven the school crazy banging, stretching, cutting, and shaking objects to find the perfect sounds. All of our work proved fruitful and we walked away from the project with an amazing musical to show off. I also walked away with a new love of found sounds.
To this day I still like to find the music in the objects around me and continue to search for new ways to create music.
This brings me to the latest video from OK GO. They have always been creative with their music videos – you’ll recall the wicked treadmill dance in Here It Goes Again– and this latest video is my favourite. Combining traditional instruments with glass jars, pipes, garbage bins, and more all while driving around in their silver sedan ; they create an incredible visual recreation of their track Needing/Getting. Its totally worth watching.
Take a look!
Now, excuse me while I go find my next musical object.
