Drivin’ Music…
Recently, I acquired a car to help with the crazy long commute to work. TTC be damned! *snicker*
While having a vehicle had put a pretty bit dent in the bank account, it has proved to be very useful and given me a great reason to use the CDs that have just been gathering dust on my shelf.
I’m still figuring out exactly what kind of music I like to drive through, but here’s what I’ve learned so far.
Radiohead is a great band to listen to on cloudy days. They keep you calm while dealing with traffic but also uplift you from the greyness that it outside. When King of Limbs came out, It was the first thing to go on in my car and made for an absolutely lovely drive. A word of warning though, its so easy to fall into the flow of the music and the enjoyment of the drive that you can end up forgetting about the fact that you eventually need to change lanes, make turns, and stop driving. I was so into the music that I almost missed my exit off the 401.
And while we’re on the topic of electronic based bands, might I suggest listening to The Faint? excellent beats, nifty lyrics (for you wordy types) and I never missed an exit. not once.
I love to sing, so playing tunes in the car that i can belt along to are a total win with me. Tallest Man of Earth makes for a really great late night drive down the DVP. Singing along to his brilliant lyrics I can’t help but smile every time I pass a car and dance in place when I come to stop lights. Fleet Foxes, Fiona Apple and Local Natives are also great for this purpose.
Word to the wise, though… Listening to Yeah Yeah Yeahs will be almost guaranteed to raise your road rage capacity. Don’t get me wrong, I completely love the sound of Karen O’s voice blaring through my speakers but I’ve noticed that my irritability levels go way up and I had very little patience for the drivers in front of me. I was getting quite stabby on the way to work today and had to change it up and listen to the radio to even it all out again.
So next time you’re in the car, experiencing some kind of crazy road rage- evaluate your tunage. Changing it up may just prevent that crazy vein in your neck from popping out again and again.
