Canadian Music Week… who to see?

March 8, 2011 | Filed under: Canadian Music Week, Music and tagged with: Berlin Brides, Billy The Kid, Canadian Music Week, Dead Messenger, land of talk, music, The Coppertone, USS

It all gets underway TOMORROW!

The problem with festivals like CMW is that they don’t play fair. They go ahead and book hundreds of amazing acts and give you just 4 days to check out as much as you can. Its hard to know where to start! In an effort to help with this overwhelming process of choosing your shows I’ve compiled a short list of a few highlights you really don’t wanna miss. Today’s post: Wednesday and Thursday. Tomorrow: Friday to Sunday.

This is gonna be a great event! I hope you have your wristband ready, cuz we’re gonna be running around a heck-of-a-lot!

Wednesday

The Coppertone

I first saw The Coppertone during Indie Week last year, and they completely blew me away. If you wanna see some amazing blues rock fronted by the fiery Amanda Zelina, check ‘em out at the Dakota at Midnight.

(** I’m also really excited to finally get to see Michigan natives The Wildbirds following The Coppertone at 1am).

Berlin Brides

If you want to see a high energy show Greek wonders ‘Berlin Brides’ are for you. With catchy beats and an in-your-face style, their shows are fun and fierce. They rock the Neutral stage at 1am.

Thursday

Billy the Kid

My photographer friend Mike is totally in love with British Columbia’s Billy the Kid. If her voice is a beautiful as the way she photographs, it’s gonna be a good show. Check her out at 11 PM at the Dakota

USS

Shout outs to Parkdale! I am SUPER pumped to see Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker (aka USS). How to describe what they do…. Well, they say they like to call it “campfire after-party” which I think is pretty appropriate. Take some Drum and Bass, add grungy guitar, and presto! USS. On stage 11pm at the Phoenix.

Land of Talk

Land of Talk won my heart many moons ago, yet I have never seen them live. Thankfully that’s all about to change. Their latest album Cloak and Cipher is one of my go-to iPod selections and made it on my top albums of 2010 list. Elizabeth Powell has a captivating voice that will leave you wanting more and more. Fall in love with them (with me!) at midnight at The Phoenix

Dead Messenger

Another incredible Indie Week find! I’m a big fan of these rockin’ Montrealers. If you’re craving a grungier, harder sound then make your way to The Bovine Sex Club at midnight and check out Dead Messenger.

Sleep deprivation here we come! but at least our brains will be singing.
