CATL like at the Dakota

February 23, 2012 | Filed under: Music, Show Reviews and tagged with: CATL, Dakota Tavern, Toronto Music

Guest Blogger Melanie Gorka headed to the Dakota Tavern.  Apparently I missed a whole lof of dancing fun!

Heading to the Dakota I always know what I’m getting into: music that will fall somewhere between country, rock, and blues with a little hillbilly thrown in. I’d heard good things about CATL as a two-piece blues band and so was eager to see them live as a three piece with the addition of Sarah Kilpatrick on keys, vocals and percussion. The music, much like the space and clientele had a bit of a grit to it.  This is how I prefer to enjoy blues, with a rocky edge and a beat that just begs the crowd to start dancing.

The band kept up their energy well into a third set and I can’t imagine them as a two piece. There’s something about the intense focused drumming of Johnny La Rue, and Jamie Fleming on Guitar and Vocals that is complemented by the addition of Kilpatrick with her unique style and killer voice. I’ll definitely be back to join the crowd in dancing to CATL, and will drag Six along with me next time! The band is set to take a hiatus while they complete an album but my shoes are ready for when they hit the stage again.
